MultiCopy by Plu*Perfect

Last revision of this page: January 24, 2025

Basically, the MultiCopy diskette contains three different main programs. These are

  1. MULTICPY
  2. TURBOSET
  3. DOSDISK
A companion program, MULTICPY (sold separately), allow TurboRom-equipped Kaypros to format disks in foreign formats, and to make exact copies of entire disks in those formats. And the TURBOSET utility allow the user to specify some 90 foreign formats, making nearly every 5 1/4" MFM-coded soft-sector format disk directly usable on a Kaypro computer.
MULTICPY and TURBOSET use a database (in dBase II format) of physical and logical disk formats. Because the database is extensible, new formats can be added. At Plu*Perfect Systems we use MULTICPY to produce distribution disks in many popular formats. If you have an unusual one, and can supply the physical and logical disk parameters and a sample disk, we can probably add it.
If your BIOS isn't this up-to-date, it is possible to temporarily replace its disk driver functions with a special application program long enough to copy files to or from a foreign format disk. Such a program must be written for your specific computer's hardware. Two popular utilities of this sort are UniForm (MicroSolutions) and Media Master (Intersecting Concepts).
You will find a cross-format tool is essential if you need to exchange data on a format not supported by your computer. The TURBOSET approach is the most flexible. It lets you use the foreign format disk with any regular CP/M program, just like your native-format disks. With the other tools you load the format-conversion utility, copy the needed file(s) to or from your native-format disk, remove the utility, and then run your regular programs.

Plu*Perfect Systems has just released a new version of MultiCopy. With the new version TurboROM Kaypros can set a floppy drive to MS-DOS format as well as CP/M formats, and a new program included with MultiCopy, DOSDISK, allows your Kaypro to directly read and write MS-DOS format disks using their CP/M programs.
MultiCopy is $39 from Plu*Perfect Systems, Box 1494, Idyllwild, CA 92349. The TurboROM is $59.95 and MultiCopy ought to be $39. Add $5 shipping. You can probably get it for $25 if you purchase it with the TurboROM.

With MultiCopy you can copy 86 different CP/M formats and four MS-DOS formats or format floppy disks. However, you need at least two floppy drives for copying. Multicopy is intended for use with the Advent TurboROM, which (basically) supports up to four floppy drives and two hard disks.

These disk formats are stored in a dBASE II file. And the wonderful thing is, you can change and add to the formats. All you need is dBASE II, at least version 2.4. My Kaypro 10/83 runs version 2.43.

TURBOSET

With TURBOSET you can emulate any CP/M drive/format given in the MULTIDAT.DBF database and copy files under CP/M with PIP, ...: „It lets you use the foreign format disk with any regular CP/M program, just like your native-format disks.“

In the following example, I formatted a floppy disk in MORROW MD3 (48) format and copied a few text files with PIP.

Of course, I cannot say how these two programs actually work in interaction with other CP/M computers, as I currently only have a Kaypro.

DOSDISK

With DOSDISK you can emulate a MS-DOS DSDD drive/format and copy files under CP/M with PIP, ...: „It lets you use the foreign format disk with any regular CP/M program, just like your native-format disks.“
